In the small intestine the largest part of the absorption of nutrients takes place. Every part of the small intestine absorbs other nutrients to a certain extent. The last piece of the ileum, for example, is the only vitamin B12 to absorb. A lot of moisture is also absorbed in the small intestine. Bile and digestive juices from the pancreas also end up in the small intestine.
The food then continues to the colon. It absorbs the last nutrients and also moisture. There are also a lot of bacteria in the colon. These also play an important role in digestion. Influenced by the bacteria, vitamin K is formed, which is then absorbed into the blood.
